The Compromise of 1850 consists of five laws that were passed in September 1850, all dealing with slavery. In 1849 California requested permission to enter the Union as a free and slave state. Senator Henry Clay introduced many solutions, in an attempt to seek a compromise and avert a crisis between North and South. The Fugitive Slave Act was amended and the slave trade in Washington D.C. was abolished. California entered the Union as a free state. The South was guaranteed that no federal restrictions on slavery would be placed on Utah and New Mexico. Slavery was still in the nation's capital, but slave trade was prohibited.
