The War of 1812 went on for 3 years (1812-1815). A new generation of leaders came during this war: Henry Clay and Andrew Jackson. This war was known as "Mr. Madison's War" or "The Second American Revolution". The leaders of this war was Presdient James Madison (American) and the Secretary of War Henry Bathurst. This war was an abundance of battles. USS Constitution (ship) met with British ship, Guerrière off the coast of Nova Scotia. The Constitution fired, but when Guerrière returned fire the cannonball bounced off the iron side of the Constitution. "Old Ironsides" won one of the first battles of the War of 1812. The British had hundreds of ships stationed around the world. Although we didn't have a lot of ships, we had some advantages. The U.S. government licensed privately owned ships to attack so we did not have to spend a lot of money building naval ships. The well built vessels carried more cannons then what the British ships could carry. January 22nd had the highest number of fatalities then any other battle in this war. This was part of a larger US plan to advance north and retake Fort Detroit. In April 1813, the Battle of York (Toronto) was going on. US troops were taking control of the Great Lakes and they burned York. In September 1813, the Battle of Lake Erie begun. Captain Oliver Hazard Perry lead a group of 9 American ships to victory over a group of 6 Births warships. October 1813 is when the Battle of Thames (Ontario, Canada) happened. Tecumseh was killed in the US victory. Tecumseh was a Native American leader of the Shawnee. In March 1814, the Battle of Horseshoe Bend happened. Andrew Jackson defeated the Creek Indians. During 1814 the British planned a 3-part invasion on the U.S. in Chesapeake Bay, Lake Champlain, and the mouth of Mississippi River. In August 1814, the British burn Washington D.C. Then Madison flees the White House. In September 1814, the Battle of Plattsburgh (Lake Champlain) took place. The US secured its northern border with a huge victory of a larger British forces. The American naval force was under the force of Master Commandant Thomas Macdonough. Then the Treaty of Ghent took place on December 24, 1814. The British and American diplomats agree to return to the status they were at before the war. Although the Treaty was signed, in January 1815 the Battle of New Orleans took place. Andrew Jackson got a huge victory and paved his way to the White House. 700 British were killed, 1400 were wounded, and the US only lost 8 soldiers.
