Louisiana Purchase
What is the Louisiana Purchase? The Louisiana Purchase is the purchase of French land between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains that nearly doubled the size of the United States. This was a purchase of 828,000,000 square miles with $15 million dollars. This purchase of land happened on April 30th, 1803 when they signed the Louisiana Purchase Treaty. With the Pinckney Treaty in place and the weak Spanish empire in control of Louisiana, American statesmen felt the westward expansion would not restrict their future. Part or all of 15 states were eventually created from the land deal.

Lewis and Clark Expedition
Jefferson initiated an exploration of the newly purchased land in the West.
They were in search of the Northwest Passage. This expedition was very dangerous and harsh. They traveled by foot, by land, and by water. They used keelboats and horses to help them travel. Meriwether Lewis was the commanding captain and William Clark was the co-commanding captain. They were both hoping to find a water link for the Pacific Ocean and Mississippi River. This expedition took the Corps of Discovery with them down the Ohio River, up the Missouri River, across the Continental Divide, and to the Pacific Ocean. Their journey began near St. Louis, Missouri in the summer of 1804. They reached the Pacific Ocean in November in 1805. They built Fort Clasp. They ended up staying there for the winter. On their way back in 1806, Lewis and Clark searched for a faster route back home. There was great danger when the Blackfeet Indians sought to steal from the corps in July. The two groups then met back together at the Missouri River and traveled back to St. Louis together.
LEQ: How did the westward expansion transform our nation? The Louisiana Purchase helped our nation form 15 of our states that we have right now. If the Louisiana Purchase didn't happen we most likely would not have a nation. If we were to have a nation we wouldn't have that big of a nation. The Lewis and Clark expedition helped us explore more of what land we purchased. This expedition also helped us explore many routes around and in the land.
